S3E10 - My Truth as a Black American (Matthew Brents, Finish Line transportation and supply chain)
Jul 27, 2020 Season 3
Sara McInerney Hauck

Today's episode is a result of my initiative "You Have My Microphone." I opened my show to any person of color who wants to share a story, experience, fear, hope, whatever is on their heart so we can listen. If you'd like to participate, you can call 317-296-3737, email hello@facingfearwithsara.com or remain 100% anonymous by filling out this form.

This episode has three parts. The first is a call I had with Matthew Brents, a 20 year employee of Finish Line in transportation and receiving. In June, Finish Line hosted something called Conscious Conversations where employees of color shared their stories while hundreds of employees listened for two hours. Matthew was bluntly honest during his part and I approached him to come on the show to spread his stories further. He puts us in his shoes as he shares his life from growing up and being denied the ability to give a speech in history class on Juneteenth, to socializing while being a minority at a party to the support we can give each other to make the world a more peaceful place. He leaves us with a challenge to listen to exercise our ability to hear, rather than just passively listen. Let's hear each other.

The second part of this episode includes an email I received. This person is originally from Northwest Indiana, where I am from and grew up. She shares names she's been called and what she learned and didn't learn while growing up that has shaped her perception.

Finally, I shared another podcast with you I'd like you to check out called, "Just a Kid from Gary" with Josh Sims. He's a fellow Region Rat and Ball State Cardinal who is on a mission to inspire others around the globe to discover their true dreams and make them a reality. Josh also owns 2eze, a clothing company dedicated to the empowerment of design and how it's used to inspire people.
